Alright, Gleeks. After months of off-time, Fox's scrappy musical hit Glee is set to return to the air a week from today with the first episode in the second half of its freshman year. Things have been a little shaky for this one-of-a-kind series, but Fox finally ordered a second season. Maybe that's because the show has some pull with the highest office in the country. The cast performed at the White House on Easter, so chances are good that Sasha and Malia, if not their parents, are fans. TV World will be resuming its coverage of Glee as promised, so here's a quick recap of what happened in this season's first half.
Baby Drama
Quinn got pregnant early in the season. The daddy is Puck, but Quinn told everyone the honor went to Finn. By the midseason finale "Sectionals" the truth came out, creating a personal rift between the three of them that threatened to tear apart New Directions. Finn decided to remain loyal to the glee club, but things are still rather frosty outside the choir room. Similarly, Terri's fake pregnancy backfired when Will discovered her prosthetic belly, ending their relationship.
Love Trouble
At the end of their performance at Sectionals, New Directions sang the Rolling Stones classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want", a fitting reflection of the many romantic plots weaved throughout the series. Though Will and Emma seem to have made a last-minute connection in the final moments of the midseason finale, they left a heartbroken Ken in their wake. Rachel's budding affection for Finn remains unrequited, likewise for poor Kurt and his impossible quarterback crush (though there are rumored plans to introduce a love interest for Kurt this spring). Artie and Tina had one date and it didn't end very well. Tina revealed that her stutter is fake, betraying Artie's trust and ending their relationship before it had a chance to blossom.
Sue Loses the Battle and Declares All-Out War
Cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester spent the better part of Season 1, Part 1 trying to destroy New Directions for the sake of her program's exorbitant funding and not just a little vainglorious conquest. We got bits and pieces of sympathy for her along the way, lending an air of tragedy and desperation to her attacks on the glee club. She went way over the line when she stole the club's set list for Sectionals and gave it to the competing teams. She mostly didn't get away with it, but the loss just put her on track to fight even harder in the second half of the season.
Lots of Awesome Music
The cast of Glee has really proved its chops with a wide variety of song and dance routines. The set list so far has included a couple classic showtunes, a little Bon Jovi, Nelly and even some Tina Turner. When the show premiered last spring, a lot of critics were wary of the ability of a musical high school dramedy to stay afloat on modern TV. Well, the formula has worked with just a few hiccups, proving that Glee is a unique and vital part of today's television landscape.
Glee premieres Tuesday April 13th at a special time, 9:28 PM Eastern on Fox.
