What’s alternately endearing and disgusting about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the juvenile crap that either weights down an episode or makes it hilarious. Each character is perpetually eleven years old, which is fine except for when their personalities wind up making a scene or episode completely unbelievable. But then again, maybe we should just accept whatever’s dished out as the gospel of comedy and suspend reality for twenty two minutes a week. That’s probably the best idea.
This week, though, on “The Gang Reignites the Rivalry,” the plot swings wildly from the onset to the tail end of the show. It’s not disjointed, but the episode ends up being more about competing with frat guys then the rivalry with another bar.
There’s apparently a yearly flip cup competition that the gang was involved in where they formed a nasty rivalry with a competing bar down the way. Because of an unfortunate poisoning incident, Paddy’s has been bared from competing for the last decade. Yeah, Charlie saw fit to almost kill the staff of another bar in order to win a competition. At least it’s keeping with his character, though.
Since the ban is up, the gang sees its way to their rivals establishment and Dennis takes a whizz in the corner of the much renovated bar. Its owner obviously takes umbrage with what was going on, but that only results in Dennis and Frank heading over to his home a bit later and wrecking everything after each blows a generous amount of a fictitious drug.
To bolster the Paddy’s team in the impending flip cup competition, though, Charlie and Mac head to Dennis’ old frat after he and Frank are ejected. In the first pair’s attempt at locating some suitable ringers, they meet up with some eager co-eds who want to paint their bodies and then shower together to get all nice and clean. Not a bad deal except for the fact that the dumb duo is run out of the house by some of the ranking frat dudes.
Fortunately or not, the gang rallies and returns in order to settle the score. Beer in hand, they challenge some frat guys to a game of flip cup. And even though the younger crew trounces the Paddy’s team, Charlie poisons the twenty somethings. So who wins? We as the viewers do.
As the episode comes to a close with everyone reminiscing about the triumph that the convoluted assault afforded the gang – apart from Dee who caught a bit of poisoning herself – Paddy’s rival from down the way storms in and demands that the crew show up for the flip cup competition. He wants satisfaction. The only problem is the fact that the gang is all tuckered out from tricking kids and really has not desire to get into a game of flip cup.
In an entertaining display of short sightedness, Dennis cracks wise about the maturity level of the guy who’s just barged in. It’s childish and kinda dumb, but that’s what fans want and desire from Sunny.
