Season Two of Legend of the Seeker is actually based on the second and third books in the Sword of Truth series, but it wasn't until this week that it really felt like we were dealing with so much plot. All in all, I think this suddenly loaded story worked for the series. After roughly a season and a half of trying to capture new viewers by leaning on a mix of one-off episodes and more plot-heavy arcs, Seeker seems to finally be finding its stride by latching onto the inherently epic nature of high fantasy. In a single episode, the show's world got a lot bigger and its characters that much more interesting.
When we last left our heroes, they were chasing Denna through the woods after she stole the magical compass that will lead them to this season's magical whatsit, the Stone of Tears. In the middle of the chase Richard starts getting sharp headaches, which turn out to be symptoms of his latent magical abilities. Those of us who have been watching since the beginning will remember the Season One episode "Revnant" in which we learned that Richard has some magical ability in him, though what kind we never got to find out. I've been waiting for that particular plot point to show up again and now, eight episodes into Season Two, it's finally here.
This is where the episode divides into three different stories. Denna kidnaps Zedd to use him for her own devices, Kahlan and Cara chase them down and have some bonding moments along the way, and finally Richard wanders off with The Sisters of Light so they can take him to Terry Goodkind's version of Hogwarts so they can cure him of his deadly headaches and turn him into a wizard.
Sound like a lot? It is, but that's exactly what Seeker needs. For the first time since the Season One finale, this show actually felt like it justified its hour-long run time. So much happened and none of its was boring. Maybe it was just the promise of major developments down the road, but "Light" clipped along with such confidence that it made Seeker into the show it has always aspired to be. By the end Zedd reunites with the female half of Team Protagonist and Denna maybe dies but probably doesn't (not that I'm complaining). As for Richard, he saves some people from an entirely new part of the world and makes his way to Magic School after killing some nifty monsters. Fun was had by all.
Best Moment: Watching Zedd being clever. All too often he's relegated to Fire Hands duty and it's easy to forget that his conventional trickery is his real hallmark.
Notes: I'm glad Kahlan and Cara got some time to test out their dynamic. It's time we move beyond that uneasiness anyway.
Episode Rating: 5/5- For two weeks in a row, Legend of the Seeker has been at its best. Let's hope it stays that way.
