I take a lot of flack because of my love of Grey's Anatomy. I haven't lost any romantic partners because of this love, but it's definitely come close.
But throughout the eight season of my obsession, I have never really liked the title character of the show, Meredith Grey. She's whiny; she's self-absorbed and she handles her conversations like she just has to wait until the other person closes their lips so she can open hers. Ellen Pompeo cries really, really badly, and it's always super awkward to watch. Allegedly, she just got the part because of her resemblance to Renee Zellweger.
This season, Meredith and her husband, Derek Shepherd (played by hunky dreamboat, Patrick Dempsey) try and adopt an African baby named Zola. Meredith is supposed to be emotionally inept and unstable and all of that, but she's got a pretty successful life so far: hunky husband, superior surgical skills and now a cute kid. But you know that the pin's about to drop because she's got too much, and she's too damn unstable--this show's all about random punishment for Achille's heels.
In the end, they lose the kid. But Shonda Rhimes, you can't blame your audience for not caring. Meredith is nuts, and while we feel sorry for Derek, we don't understand why he's with her in the first place.
In this week's episode, Meredith not only learns that she's going to lose the baby, but also gets into an ambulance crash involving a new-born baby, a rural Washington road and a bunch of dead bodies. Life can suck sometimes, Shonda, but life really sucks too much for Meredith.
Here are some of the random tragedies that Meredith has seen since her time at Seattle Grace. Seattle seems like a danger zone according to this show, but it's pretty tame in real-life:
--A patient comes into the hospital with an unexploded homemade bazooka in his chest (chortle, chortle). Meredith puts her hand in the patient's chest to stop the bleeding or something, but they remove the bazooka without it blowing up. Sadly, Meredith is unharmed.
--Meredith goes to care for patients injured during a ferryboat accident, but is knocked into the water by a patient. She decides she will stop breathing and drown herself. Hurray! Derek to the rescue. He saves his wife-to-be, but she's all blue and suicidal, reminding us to say again, damn, that man could do better!
To be continued...
