There seems to be a pretty pervasive consensus that Weeds should have ended a few years back. And watching the show parsed up from week to week might bear that out. Maybe. But in readying television sets for the show’s sixth season, it’d be a great service to revisit the show, in sequential order and in its entirety.
It’s easy to dismiss any show that moves on past season three or four – The Office is a pretty strong example of that. And while it’s difficult to keep the faith, as it were, the minds that created this universe are still working on the show. So there’s that if nothing else. Yeah, it’s difficult to get that lemonade from a cart full of lemons, but that’s all we’ve got.
With the announcement that Elizabeth Perkins and her Celia character are leaving the show after season six, there was some consternation on the part of internet denizens as to how that was to impact not just this season, but the entire series. With the conclusion of season five being Celia rounding up a soon to be drug cartel, her impending exit might only mean having that arc be played out more quickly. And with the pacing of the last few seasons, that’s not really too bad an idea.
Regardless, the show’s set to relocate again. This time, though, it’s out of So Cal and into the Northwest. Of course, British Columbia isn’t too far away – maybe three or four hours by car. But Seattle has its own legacy of drug use (and it doesn’t need to be tied to all those mid nineties’ heroin deaths). That part of the country’s just known for herbs. There aren’t any pot clubs around, so that’ll be an interesting caveat to explore as well.
But what’s going to happen to Alanis Morisette? As Andy’s love interest and a doctor, there seems to be some conflict as to whether or not the character’s a sensible person or not. Moving to Seattle or not is going to be the litmus test. Either way, Morisette turned in a pretty surprising and impressive performance last year.
With its relocation, Weeds is also adding Linda Hamilton to the cast. She’s set to play some green thumbed individual, but her personality on the show is set to be more interesting than her occupation. Hamilton and Mary-Louise Parker’s Nancy are going clash at some point. That’s certain. But what isn’t is where the family’s going to live.
Seattle is chocked full of neighborhoods. Downtown probably won’t be the answer. Nor the Central District. My guess is that somewhere north (ie Ballard, Greenlake, etc) or Queen Anne is going to be the answer unless they opt for the suburbs. And then it’s anyone’s guess.
Even with all of this change, there’s still the little problem of Shane bludgeoning Pillar with a mallet at the end of last season. There’s got to be some sort of repercussion. But we’ve got until the middle of August to keep on guessing. Any thoughts…?
