Emmy Awards 2012: A huge night for 'Homeland' and 'Modern Family'

Showtime drama and ABC sitcom take top honors.

Let me say this now: If you aren't watching Homeland, you are seriously missing out. I know I've mentioned this before, but honestly, it's one of the best TV dramas I've seen in a long time. I'm almost done with the first season (thank you, Netflix) and with one episode to go, I'm now certain that I love this show as much, or more, than I loved The Wire.

Homeland came up big at tonight's 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards. The Showtime hit took home a slew of Emmys, including outstanding drama and acting awards for stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. ABC's hit comedy Modern Family also continued it's Emmy winning streak, winning outstanding comedy for the third year in a row. Now, back to discussing Homeland, because I'm so totally obsessed with it. If you've ever truly loved a TV show so much that you almost don't want to watch anything else, you know how I feel right now. I am so grateful to the (many) friends and colleagues of mine who begged me to watch it, even offering to buy me the DVD when it comes out (seriously, they did).

Claire Danes' portrayal of a bipolar CIA agent in Homeland is beyond sublime, and Damian Lewis is my new favorite TV actor. Both deserved their Emmy Awards tonight, and yes, I love Bryan Cranston too -- but this was Lewis' year. His work as Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody has left me speechless on more than one occasion.

It's hard trying to write about Homeland without giving anything away to those of you who haven't seen it yet. But trust me: This show is worth your time.

Modern Family was the other big winner at the 2012 Emmy Awards, but honestly, is anyone even surprised by this fact? It's always a great show, and I was really glad to see Julie Bowen, in particular, honored as a supporting actress -- again.

Here's a list of the other Emmy Awards 2012 winners. Did your favorites win? For once, mine did! Although to be fair, I do love Breaking Bad, and I also hope that at some point, Jon Hamm will finally win a (much deserved) Emmy Award for his work as Don Draper on Mad Men.
