'The Vampire Diaries' is changing in major ways

Elena is a vampire?

Okay by now, if you're a die-hard fan of The Vampire Diaries, you've seen the season premiere, right? If not, stop reading. You've been warned. Because there are a few things I like about this new season, and a few things I find disappointing -- and I'm going to lay them out right here, right now.

First, I'm not sure I'm down with having Elena become a vampire. In the books, this doesn't happen, so now they're way off track. I liked the human element of Elena and the need to protect her (courtesy of the two most dashing vamps on TV, Stefan and Damon Salvatore).
Look, I realize major things needed to get moving along with The Vampire Diaries storyline, I'm just not thrilled about the direction of the season premiere. I'm still a fan, just a slightly perturbed fan. In the interest of full disclosure, I guess I should also say that I'm an Elena and Damon fan, so maybe that's what's really rubbing me the wrong way. She chose wrong. Again.

Whew, I feel better now. Okay, what I loved: Klaus and Caroline, or the possibility of Klaus and Caroline. Then the possibility of Caroline and Tyler-Klaus, but she caught on to his being in Tyler's body too quickly, darn it. I would've liked to have seen the Klaus/Tyler's body bit play out a little longer. Klaus is now back to being a meanie, so I doubt we'll see these two get any closer in coming weeks. Boo!

All of this nitpicking aside, I'm so thankful to have a brand new season of The Vampire Diaries laid out in front of me in coming months. I got hooked on this series via Netflix, and then read the books, so I'm still a "newbie" fan I suppose.

Fans, what do you think about the decision to turn Elena into a vampire? Great move? Too soon? And do you think Caroline and Klaus might someday get together? Let's hear it in the comments!
